About this book

This brief textbook underpins the concept of eco-efficiency in product design and systematically addresses the essence of the integration of simplified life cycle assessment (LCA) methods and tools into industrial design. Fundamental steps of LCA-based tools implementation within the higher education context are proposed, using energy-related products (ErP) design as a prime case study. All chapters are designed to respond to the common frequently asked questions in LCA-based tools implementation during the sustainable product design process. The chapters are also enriched with discussions, data sources of simplified LCA tools, and examples of design assignments that provide constructive learning. Some assignments aim at encouraging tool users’ reflections while others tackle particularly at knowledge exchange. The examples can assist the reader to visualize challenges and opportunities to engage learners who are tool users. This textbook broadens LCA knowledge for industrial design and environmental engineering students as well as enhance their sustainable product design performance. For professional practitioners including industrial designers, product engineers, entrepreneurs and the like, this textbook can be used as a guide at the introductory level for integrating life cycle thinking into product design and development.

Table of Contents

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
In response to the needs of the sustainability issues in design and manufacturing industries, equipping engineering and design students in higher education with life cycle thinking through the use of life cycle-based design methods and tools can help them in enhancing their sustainable design performance.
Suphichaya Suppipat, Treechada Chotiratanapinun, Kulthida Teachavorasinskun, Allen H. Hu
Chapter 2. Designer’s Guide for Life Cycle Assessment
Abstract
As previously mentioned in Chap. 1, life cycle assessment (LCA) is a technique for assessing the environmental burdens associated with a product over its life cycle.
Suphichaya Suppipat, Treechada Chotiratanapinun, Kulthida Teachavorasinskun, Allen H. Hu
Chapter 3. LCA-based Design Strategies and Simplified LCA Tools for Designers
Abstract
As described in Chap. 2, the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology is rather complex and requires intensive data collection, especially for design practitioners who need to simultaneously focus on aesthetics, user-centered design, and product structural design during the design process.
Suphichaya Suppipat, Treechada Chotiratanapinun, Kulthida Teachavorasinskun, Allen H. Hu
Chapter 4. Challenges and Opportunities of Implementing Simplified LCA Tools in Industrial Design Education
Abstract
In this chapter, the challenges and opportunities of applying an LCA-based tool for designers in the product design and development process derived from intensive literature review and accumulative in-classroom design activities are discussed on the basis of the authors’ academic and industrial experiences.
Suphichaya Suppipat, Treechada Chotiratanapinun, Kulthida Teachavorasinskun, Allen H. Hu
Chapter 5. Social Aspect of Sustainability in the LCA Methodology
Abstract
The previous chapters focus on environmental sustainability and the scientific nature of LCA. This chapter emphasizes more on the social sciences and highlights the inclusion of “people” in the realm of life cycle thinking (LCT).
Suphichaya Suppipat, Treechada Chotiratanapinun, Kulthida Teachavorasinskun, Allen H. Hu
Chapter 6. LCA-based Tool Practice: Seven Steps for ErP Design Implementation
Abstract
This chapter proposes a seven-step guide for applying LCA-based tools in the ErPs design process: (1) define a functional unit, (2) scope a product system, (3) investigate an inventory data, (4) draw a process tree, (5) analyze the environmental and social aspects, (6) define the environmental and social hotspots, and (7) propose a new concept development.
Suphichaya Suppipat, Treechada Chotiratanapinun, Kulthida Teachavorasinskun, Allen H. Hu
Chapter 7. Summary
Abstract
LCA is considered a powerful tool to enhance the eco-efficiency and design for sustainability of the products if integrated into the early stages of the product design and development process. However, only a limited number of product engineers and industrial designers have a background knowledge about LCA and apply it for achieving the responsible production and consumption in their professional practice.
