Abstract

The chapter delves into advanced design methods for overhangs, focusing on optimizing shading and energy efficiency in buildings. It begins with the cellular method, which divides the shading support surface into cells and calculates the necessity of each cell for shading based on hourly solar radiation. This method allows for the creation of heat maps that inform the designer about the optimal overhang shape. The chapter also discusses NURBS-outlined overhangs, which use Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) to create smooth and curvilinear overhang shapes that are both aesthetically pleasing and energy-efficient. Additionally, it explores retrofits, such as adding overhangs to existing buildings to improve energy efficiency.
