Abstract

The chapter focuses on the critical challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector by optimizing the design of aircraft cabin panels. Traditional sandwich structures, while advantageous in weight-specific properties, present challenges in load introduction and optimization. The chapter introduces two innovative approaches using additive manufacturing (AM) to address these challenges: a load path optimized partition with a mounted cabin attendant seat fabricated via direct energy deposition, and topology-optimized solid block inserts manufactured through stereolithography. These approaches leverage the design freedom and local reinforcement capabilities of AM, offering significant weight reductions and improvements in material utilization. The chapter compares these solutions to existing methods, discusses certification challenges, and highlights the potential for future advancements in lightweight aircraft design.
