Abstract

This chapter delves into the design and implementation of a digital twin for a mixed-model stochastic assembly line, aiming to reduce cycle time and improve production efficiency. The study begins with an overview of the evolution of assembly lines, highlighting the shift from make-to-stock to make-to-order paradigms in the era of Industry 4.0. It explores various types of assembly lines, including single-model, multi-model, and mixed-model configurations, and discusses the challenges associated with assembly line balancing and cycle time reduction. The chapter then focuses on the development of a digital twin for a mixed-model stochastic straight-type assembly line, utilizing real-time data to monitor and optimize production processes. A case study of a water bottling plant is presented, detailing the experimental setup and the use of MATLAB and SIMULINK for developing both digital shadow and digital twin models. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of digital twins in reducing cycle times and enhancing overall production efficiency. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the advantages of digital twins over traditional methods, emphasizing their real-time monitoring and predictive capabilities.
