Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate relationship between wine tourism and culture, highlighting how cultural elements can enrich and innovate wine tourism experiences. The study focuses on Santorini, a region renowned for its distinctive terroir and rich wine culture, to investigate how cultural features are embedded into wine tourism experiences. The findings reveal that cultural elements are integrated into three major aspects of wine tourism experiences: the wine itself, the winescape, and the performance of the wine experience. The chapter also identifies four different ways in which wineries embed wine culture into their experiences, including commoditizing, consuming, co-creating, and inspiring. The study concludes that embedding culture into wine tourism experiences can differentiate a wine destination, enhance place authenticity, and contribute to sustainable tourism development. Additionally, the chapter discusses the challenges and motives behind using cultural features in wine tourism, such as differentiation, aestheticization, authentication, symbolization, and rejuvenation. The role of storytelling in communicating cultural features and connecting tourists with the local wine culture is also emphasized. Overall, the chapter provides valuable insights into how culture can be leveraged to create more engaging and authentic wine tourism experiences.
