Abstract

This chapter explores an improved method for detecting multiple damages in I-section steel beams using mode shape curvature changes. The study employs finite element modeling to simulate beam structures and analyzes the impact of damage on the beam's vibration characteristics. The method focuses on using mode shape data to identify damage locations, with a proposed damage threshold to determine the extent of damage. The study introduces three damage detection indices to assess the accuracy of the method. The results demonstrate high reliability in identifying both single and multiple damage zones. The chapter also discusses the importance of selecting the appropriate number of vibration modes for accurate damage detection. The study concludes that the improved mode shape curvature change-based method is effective in identifying the presence and location of damages in steel beams. The chapter provides valuable insights into the practical application of this non-destructive damage detection technique, making it a crucial resource for professionals in structural health monitoring and civil engineering.
