Abstract

Concrete structures, ubiquitous in modern infrastructure, face significant challenges due to mechanical overloading and environmental factors, leading to micro-cracks that can propagate and cause catastrophic failures. This chapter delves into the critical need for early detection and monitoring of these damages, emphasizing the limitations of traditional methods and the advantages of non-destructive testing (NDT). It explores the evolution of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems, which utilize signal processing and image processing techniques to identify and assess structural integrity in real-time. The chapter provides an in-depth analysis of various signal processing methods, including wavelet transforms, Fourier transforms, and modal analysis, highlighting their strengths and limitations in detecting and localizing damages. It also examines the application of image processing techniques, such as contourlet transforms and neural networks, in automating the crack detection process. The chapter discusses the integration of these techniques with advanced sensors and computing systems, offering a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art methods in SHM.
