Abstract

The study investigates the detection of seismic precursors in converted ultrasonic waves to predict shear failure in natural sandstone rock joints. It explores the influence of surface roughness and normal stress on the failure mechanism and uses ultrasonic wave analysis to identify precursors. The research employs a single direct shear device and digital image correlation technique to monitor localized slippage and ultrasonic wave transmission. The analysis focuses on the changes in transmitted and converted wave amplitudes, providing insights into the evolution of failure mechanisms. The use of advanced ultrasonic wave monitoring and analysis techniques makes this study a significant contribution to the field of rock mechanics and seismic precursor detection.
