Abstract

This chapter studies trends, composition, and determinants of rural nonfarm (RNF) employment in Assam using NSS data and distribution of rural nonfarm income based on primary survey of 280 workers in two villages of Assam. The findings reveal that employment in Assam is mainly concentrated in construction, trade, hotel and restaurant activities during the period 1993–94 to 2011–12. The share of self-employed and casual workers in the nonfarm sector has increased along with a continuous fall in the share of salaried workers in the rural areas. The most interesting finding is the U-shaped relationship between land cultivated and participation in nonfarm activities. A positive and direct relation between level of education and participation in nonfarm activities is evident. The primary survey indicates an unequal distribution of RNF income across different landholding size households.
