Abstract

This chapter delves into the dynamic effects of traffic loads on bridges, focusing on the Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF). It compares the accuracy of simple analytical models, such as the moving load model and the simple coupled model, against a complex coupled model and real-world dynamic load test results from the Ponte Balme bridge in Switzerland. The study highlights the importance of considering various factors like bridge span, natural frequency, damping, and vehicle parameters in determining DAF. It also discusses the limitations and potential improvements of these models, suggesting that incorporating additional parameters like road surface irregularities and vehicle characteristics could enhance their accuracy. The findings indicate that simpler models can provide reasonable estimates of dynamic amplification, making them valuable tools for bridge design and maintenance.
