Abstract

The study focuses on determining the chemical composition of wood vinegar (pyroligneous acid) derived from apricot kernels, kermes oak, and hazelnut shells using Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). The main constituents identified include o-guaiacol, creosol, and syringol. The antifungal activity of these wood vinegars against Fusarium proliferatum, a pathogen causing onion bulb rot, is evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The research demonstrates that wood vinegar effectively inhibits mycelial growth and conidial germination of the fungal pathogen, with apricot kernel vinegar showing the highest antifungal activity. Additionally, the study examines the morphological changes in fungal hyphae under light microscopy, revealing severe hyphal deformations induced by wood vinegar. These findings suggest that wood vinegar could serve as a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic fungicides in onion cultivation.
