Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical aspect of determining the discharge coefficient (Cd) of multiphase flowmeters, particularly Venturi meters, used in the oil and gas industry for well flow measurement. It highlights the lack of coverage in the ISO standard for multiphase flow and the scarcity of academic research on the topic. The authors employ computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to analyze the Cd in vertical and horizontal positions, comparing their findings with other studies and industry standards. The results indicate significant differences in Cd values for vertical and horizontal Venturi meters, suggesting varying energy losses due to gas-liquid interface geometry. The chapter concludes with recommendations for future research, emphasizing the need for more simulations under different flow conditions and Reynolds numbers to better understand the phenomena involved.
