Abstract

This chapter introduces the development of a detachable Body Weight Support (BWS) robotic rollator designed to assist overground gait rehabilitation for patients with gait impairments. The system incorporates wearable sensors, including an instrumented shoe system and an instrumented harness, to provide real-time feedback on gait performance. The BWS rollator is equipped with a Variable Stiffness Mechanism (VSM) that allows for variable body weight alleviation, synchronized with the user's gait events. The chapter also discusses the implementation of control strategies, such as Static Body Weight Support (SBWS) and Variable Body Weight Support (VBWS), to ensure stable and adaptive weight support during rehabilitation. Validation experiments with non-disabled subjects demonstrate the system's potential to maintain natural gait motion and its usability in complementary gait rehabilitation approaches.
