Development of a full-scale flume test system for depositional behavior study of segregating tailings

Abstract

To investigate the flow and depositional behavior of tailings slurry, a full-scale model test system capable of simulating the formation of tailings beaches was developed. An empirical formula for the beach slope was proposed, and the model flume was designed accordingly. The model system comprised four main components: the agitator unit, pumping unit, deposition flume, and backflow circulation unit. To validate the effectiveness of the developed model system, the Shouyun tailings pond in China was used as a case study. The results demonstrated a high level of consistency between the flow characteristics, sedimentary morphology, and particle distribution of tailings in both field and model tests. Concave profile was observed for the tailings slurry with a mass concentration of 20%. The beach profile and slope obtained by the verification test were also close to that of the field. Furthermore, the empirical formula for beach slope was validated by comparing the predicted results with the measured deposition slope data obtained from other tailings deposition tests reported in existing literature. In addition, an obvious bedding structure was observed in the verification test, indicating that deposited tailings had strong anisotropic characteristics.
