AVL has developed an electric axle with a 48-V motor that realizes up to 32 kW peak power. Compared to conventional low-voltage electric drives in P4 hybrid systems, the concept enables purely electric use of the vehicle with significantly higher power. For this purpose, the electric machine was designed with six phases and distributed winding. In this article, the challenges in the development of the drive system are outlined and key elements are identified to ensure that the maximum power varies only slightly in series production. …
