Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical issue of natural organic matter (NOM) in groundwater and its impact on water quality. It introduces the use of chitosan as a natural, low-cost adsorbent for removing humic acid, a significant component of NOM. The study compares the efficiency of raw chitosan beads and modified chitosan/hydroxyapatite composite beads in removing humic acid from synthetic wastewater. Through extensive laboratory studies, the authors analyze the influence of adsorbent dosage, contact time, and kinetic and isotherm models on the adsorption process. The chapter highlights the challenges and limitations of using modified adsorbents, providing valuable insights into the optimization of adsorption materials for water treatment.
