Abstract

The chapter explores the intricate process of developing automotive body parts using multi-material design, emphasizing the need for a stepwise approach with increasing levels of detail. It introduces the MultiMaK2 project, which developed a procedure for creating multi-material concepts, and showcases this procedure through case studies on a roof reinforcement and a centre tunnel. The chapter also discusses the challenges and opportunities of multi-material design, including the consideration of various development goals and boundary conditions. By using analytical models and FE simulations, the authors demonstrate how to systematically reduce the solution space and make informed decisions about design options. The chapter concludes with a summary of the findings and a look at future directions for multi-material design in the automotive industry.
