Abstract

This study addresses the critical issue of traffic congestion at unsignalized intersections in tier-II cities of India, focusing on the development of a conflicting flow model. The research identifies key factors contributing to traffic conflicts, including diverse vehicle compositions and inadequate infrastructure. Through extensive data collection and analysis from various sites, the study introduces a novel equation for estimating conflicting flow volumes, tailored to the specific conditions of tier-II cities. The findings reveal that left turn maneuvers and right turns from minor streets significantly impact traffic flow and safety. The study concludes by suggesting revised coefficients for maneuvering patterns and highlighting the importance of considering these factors in traffic management strategies. This research provides valuable insights for traffic engineers and urban planners, offering a more accurate model for predicting intersection capacity and enhancing traffic safety in emerging cities.
