Abstract

This article delves into the development of fluorescent carbon dots from mustard pods for the selective and efficient sensing of iron ions. The synthesis process involves a green, cost-effective calcination method, ensuring environmental friendliness and low toxicity. The carbon dots are characterized using various techniques such as UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, XRD, HRTEM, and FTIR, confirming their excellent physicochemical properties. The study highlights the outstanding fluorescence quenching behavior of these carbon dots towards ferric ions (Fe3+), with a detection limit of 0.042 µM. The efficacy of the system is demonstrated through real-world applications in different water samples, showing high recovery rates. This research provides a promising solution for monitoring heavy metal pollution, particularly iron, in environmental and health contexts.
