7. Development of Integrated Versatile Paper, Plastic and Aluminum Waste Sorting and Disposal System

Abstract

Today in India about 40% of waste remains uncollected and hence is not recycled. This paper presents a novel solution providing a low-cost infrastructure in the areas where the traditional recycling chain of waste pickers—Kabadiwallah—Traders—Recyclers is broken because of absence of waste pickers. Such areas were identified for this work—big housing societies, eateries, food courts and canteens in various organization. To segregate all types of recyclable wastes (predominantly plastic, aluminum and paper) generated in these areas and further processing it to reduce its volume and storing it separately to send it to respective recycling plants is the basic functioning of the proposed solution. The increase in flow and speed of recyclable waste in the recycle chain are typical outcomes of the work.
