Abstract

This chapter delves into the automation of reverse engineering processes for creating digital as-built documentation for buildings, focusing on the use of various data capturing technologies to enable 3D model reconstruction and Building Information Modeling (BIM) enrichment. It begins by outlining the state of technology, highlighting relevant sensors and measurement systems that utilize light, sound waves, and magnetism for non-destructive testing. The text then presents a general process chain for automated BIM reconstruction, detailing the steps of data capture, pre-processing, feature extraction, and model training. It also discusses the merging and integration of sensor data, emphasizing the importance of registering data in a common coordinate system. The chapter further explores the temporal sequence of object reconstruction steps, correlating them with increasing levels of development. Additionally, it examines the extraction of geometry, metadata, and BIM enrichment, including the reconstruction of non-visible technical building equipment and defects.
