AbstractToday, acquiring knowledge about the digital transformation of economic systems is vital for entrepreneurs. Alert entrepreneurs are quick to recognize new windows of opportunity, so entrepreneurial alertness is deeply correlated with economic growth. In has been analyzed in this research how alert entrepreneurs control the growth gradient of the digital economy from the micro level. An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was conducted by interviewing Iranian researchers and experts from the fields of entrepreneurship, economics, science and technology, and public policy. The results show that the cognitive characteristics of alert entrepreneurs establish networks on digital platforms. Alert entrepreneurs set values based on the belief system and ethics, which promote informal institutions and channel the bottom-up stream into regulating a new set of policies, thereby this aspect of modern economy “virtue enriches economy” is realized. -
Predicting Entrepreneurial Performance Through the Lens of Entrepreneurial Orientation and Digital Adoption: A Machine Learning Approach
Mozhgan Danesh, Masoumeh Moterased, Kamal Sakhdari, Nezameddin FaghihThis chapter delves into the dynamic business environment and the role of digital adoption in facilitating entrepreneurial activities. It defines entrepreneurial orientation (EO) as a vital intangible resource for identifying and implementing new opportunities. The study focuses on three dimensions of EO—innovativeness, pro-activeness, and risk-taking—and their impact on entrepreneurial performance (EP). It also examines the moderating role of digital adoption in the EO-EP relationship. Using machine learning, specifically the XGBoost algorithm, the research analyzes data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor and the World Bank Digital Adoption Index to predict EP. The findings highlight the significant influence of innovativeness on EP and the amplified impact of innovativeness and risk-taking when moderated by digital adoption. The chapter concludes with contributions, limitations, and future research directions, emphasizing the importance of digital technologies in enhancing entrepreneurial performance.AI Generated

AbstractIt is critical to clarify the specific causal mechanisms and boundary conditions explaining why and how entrepreneurial orientation (EO) enhances firm outcomes. However, despite more than 40 years of research, a theoretical gap is evident in many studies linking EO to firm performance outcomes. Therefore, since it is not unexpected that the diffusion of digital technologies creates a promising field for entrepreneurs and motivates them to take advantage of the adoption of technologies in their business, in this research, the moderating role of digital adoption in the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial performance has been investigated. Therefore, the aim of this research was to predict entrepreneurial performance from entrepreneurial orientation with regard to the moderating role of digital adoption. The data for this study has been derived from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) of 20 countries between 2008 and 2018, as well as the World Bank’s Digital Adoption Index (WB DAI). Based on EO, a predictive model of entrepreneurial performance was constructed using machine learning and the XGBoost algorithm. According to the findings of this study, it is evident that the various dimensions of EO exhibit differential impacts on the prediction of entrepreneurial performance. Specifically, innovativeness and risk-taking demonstrate a much greater influence compared to pro-activeness. The inclusion of digital adoption as a moderating role significantly enhanced the impact of innovativeness and risk-taking, whereas it did not have any discernible effect on pro-activeness. This research also has a valuable theoretical and managerial contribution and has provided important suggestions for future research. -

AbstractDigitalisation has led entrepreneurs to undergo major changes. As a result, most newly created ideas and organisations are digital. Given that previous studies have assessed the impact of social media using theoretical and/or practical models, this chapter proposes a guide to emphasise the key aspects of social media analytics. These guidelines empower entrepreneurs to consider the most pertinent and key considerations for developing a business strategy based on social media analytics. Simultaneously, due to the novelty and continuous evolution of technologies, collecting up-to-date content, including the most representative social media analytics, becomes key to facilitate data-driven decision-making processes. In addition, a research agenda has been proposed to enable the development and continuity of future research that considers social media analytics, digital transformation, and entrepreneurship as key to economic sustainability. Thus, this study has high relevance in managing and formulating entrepreneurial policies and strategies. -

AbstractDigital pathology is an image-based environment for the acquisition, management, sharing, and interpretation of pathology information supported by techniques for data extraction and analysis. Digital pathology is an emerging technology that can improve diagnostic approaches and the monitoring of diseases for more efficient healthcare organizations. However, the technological and organizational transformation of digital pathology units and services needs investments to support IT infrastructure, equipment, staffing and training of skilled human resources for an effective innovation ecosystem. In fact, an operational innovation ecosystem for digital pathology, in which different subjects and/or entities have complex inter-relationships, can foster the development, implementation, and diffusion of this new technological system. The goal of this study is to detect and analyze the basic elements and interactions of a functioning digital pathology ecosystem directed to support the development and widespread adoption of this new technology to increase effectiveness in healthcare organizations and improve patient care. Results show four critical factors to develop an operational digital pathology ecosystem: 1) repository and biobanks for data gathering, filing, and sharing; 2) standardization of data and information; 3) new computational techniques for data processing and analysis; and 4) skilled human resources to manage high-tech equipment and analyse digital information for research and clinical applications. AbstractInformation and communication technology (ICT) is one of the vital resources for entrepreneurs as they start and develop new ventures. Therefore, it is important to understand the ICT adoption patterns of individuals. In particular, recent research has emphasized the differences between specific entrepreneurial orientations (such as humane entrepreneurship) or those based on gender. The aim of this chapter is to help understanding the role of a humane orientation in the intention to use ICT by taking into account gender differences as well. This is done through the adoption of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model and the concept of humane entrepreneurship. Partial Least Squares (PLS) was used to estimate the proposed model. The study sample consists of 1229 individuals living in Spain. The data have been collected through surveys. Based on the results, performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence have a positive and significant effect on the intention to use ICT. Furthermore, the humane orientation positively affects the ICT use intention of individuals. The results also show that this latter effect is more prominent for women. Based on these results, policies and programs should be implemented to support and fund women’s humane entrepreneurial projects, since they are more likely to adopt ICT as an instrument. The inclusion of humane constructs in entrepreneurship education can help the emergence of new ventures that can produce technological solutions to global challenges. Additionally, ICT training for entrepreneurs can stress the UTAUT constructs such as performance benefits and ease of use to increase ICT use intention. -

AbstractIn late 2022, amid a profound economic and social crisis, over 3000 new ventures were established in Venezuela. The vast majority of them were based on technology. These ventures have pioneered innovative business models that not only create employment opportunities but also make significant social impact by addressing unmet demands of the population overlooked by both the public and traditional business sectors. These critical needs span financial inclusion, transportation, access to drinking water, food and medicine delivery, digital remittances services, telemedicine, and online education platforms. Through a multiple case study approach, this investigation classified these entities as Digital Social Ventures (DSV) and presented a systemic view that elucidates the contexts, factors, and capabilities inspiring and underpinning their viability. The synthesis of social purpose, digital cost-efficient platforms, business acumen, and ecosystem development showcases an innovative strategy to tackle the often-challenging societal needs prevalent in developing economies. -

AbstractWhile digital entrepreneurship has received increasing scholarly attention, no study has explored the challenges and prospects of digital Pentepreneurs—an emerging area in religious entrepreneurship. Pentepreneurship has grown in Africa and other parts of the world. However, a recent wave in Nigeria is the growing digitization of Pentecostal religious services, which has ushered in a new dimension of competition among Pentecostal bodies in the country. By applying the resource-based view, a qualitative study involving start-up digital Pentepreneurs in the Nigerian South was conducted. Data were subjected to content and thematic analysis. Findings indicate that the challenges faced by digital Pentepreneurs include internet network failures, weak regulatory systems, cost of digital operation, cyber insecurity, and political/cultural influence. However, several opportunities (e.g., the possibility of reaching a wider/unreached audience with the gospel, the growing size of digital worshippers, an opportunity to secure foreign partnership/financial support, the opportunity to capture and retain the youth, and the opportunity to internationalize) were identified. This chapter makes theoretical and practical contributions that will be of value to various stakeholders. -

AbstractFollowing the growing acceptance and usage of internet-enabled platforms in business transactions, religious entrepreneurs in Nigeria have embraced digitization to reach their target market. Pentecostal pastors are prominent adopters of the digital space in religious entrepreneurial pursuits in Nigeria. Popularly called Pentepreneurs, these entrepreneurs pursue both sacred and secular activities simultaneously. While empirical research on digital entrepreneurship continues to develop, few studies have been devoted to emerging digital economies. Besides, studies focusing on digital Pentepreneurship strategies and motivations are currently missing in the global literature on digital entrepreneurship. This chapter closes these gaps by leveraging the institutional theory, the theory of planned behaviour and the qualitative approach. Thus, an online semi-structured interview was conducted using a purposive sample of digital Pentepreneurs from Southern Nigeria. Generated data were analyzed by means of inductive thematic analysis. This chapter makes theoretical and practical contributions by identifying digital Pentecostal entrepreneurship’s key strategies and motivations. -
