Abstract

This chapter delves into the transformation of British comedy in the digital age, focusing on the persistence of traditional broadcasting practices amidst technological change. It examines how short-form comedy initiatives like BBC’s ‘Comedy Short Films’ and Channel 4’s ‘Comedy Blaps’ serve as modern pilot processes, bridging online and traditional television. The analysis highlights the strategic adaptation of public service broadcasters to digital platforms, using case studies such as People Just Do Nothing and Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared to illustrate the evolution from YouTube to television. The chapter also explores the institutional frameworks that support these transitions, emphasizing the role of talent development, audience engagement, and the maintenance of cultural relevance. Ultimately, it argues that while digital practices introduce new methods of content creation and distribution, they reinforce rather than disrupt established commissioning structures and production values in British comedy.
