Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of digital signatures in securing communication within constrained environments, particularly microcontroller-based systems. It explores the challenges of implementing traditional digital signature algorithms like RSA in resource-limited settings and highlights the need for more efficient alternatives. The study focuses on three key digital signature algorithms: RSA, ECDSA, and EdDSA, evaluating their performance in terms of key generation, signing, and verification processes. Through mathematical analysis and Python implementations, the research provides a comparative assessment of these algorithms, revealing that EdDSA offers the best balance of speed and resource efficiency. ECDSA also performs well, while RSA, despite its quick verification, is less suitable due to its high memory demands. The findings offer valuable insights for developers seeking to enhance the security and efficiency of digital signatures in constrained environments.
