Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical role of short-circuit detection in copper electrolysis, focusing on methods to enhance tankhouse efficiency. It begins by outlining the conventional methods, such as gaussmeter applications and cell voltage monitoring systems, which, despite their widespread use, have limitations in terms of manual labor and real-time precision. The text then introduces advanced technologies like thermal imaging and the DigMet ESCD system, which offer significant improvements in detecting and locating short circuits. A key finding is that short circuits cause about 60% of power losses, making their early detection crucial for optimizing current efficiency. The chapter also explores the financial benefits of implementing ESCD, demonstrating potential savings of up to €530,000 annually for a production of 200,000 tons of copper. Additionally, it discusses various installation methods for ESCD, including stationary cameras, crane-mounted systems, and rotating cameras, each with its own advantages and challenges. The chapter concludes by highlighting the potential for further innovations, such as machine learning and swiveling cameras, to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of short-circuit detection in copper electrolysis.
