Abstract

The chapter focuses on the optimization of shunt capacitor placement and sizing in radial distribution systems (RDS) to reduce real and reactive power losses. It introduces the Moth Flame Optimization (MFO) algorithm, which is applied to solve the optimal capacitor placement problem. The method is compared with other techniques such as Genetic Algorithm, Bacterial Foraging Optimization, and Harmony Search, demonstrating superior performance in minimizing power losses and enhancing voltage profiles. The study highlights the economic and operational benefits of capacitor utilization and provides a detailed analysis of the MFO algorithm's implementation and results. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the versatility of the MFO technique for various engineering problems, making it a valuable resource for professionals in the field of power system optimization.
