Abstract

This chapter delves into the evolution of telecommunications, highlighting the shift from analog to digital networks and the emergence of device-to-device (D2D) communication. It explores the impact of D2D communication on network lifetime and energy consumption, focusing on two topologies: direct (DC-DC) and relay-based (DR-DC) communication. The text provides a detailed analysis of the energy consumption models for both topologies, using Shannon’s capacity formula and other mathematical models to derive power consumption equations. Simulation results using Matlab demonstrate that the DR-DC topology significantly reduces energy consumption and extends network lifetime compared to the DC-DC topology. The chapter concludes by recommending the DR-DC architecture for extended network lifetime and suggests further improvements through adaptive management strategies and collaboration between network operators and energy providers.
