Abstract

The article introduces a groundbreaking approach to workflow flexibility in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by leveraging constraint satisfaction problems (CSP) and process-oriented case-based reasoning (POCBR). Traditional workflow management systems lack the flexibility needed by SMEs, which often have unique requirements and limited resources. The proposed method allows for deviations during workflow execution without the need for manual remodeling, while still providing task suggestions to support process participants. The core of the approach lies in a CSP-based workflow engine that can handle deviations and restore consistency, complemented by a case-based deviation management system that exploits experiential knowledge from previous workflows. The article discusses the development of a formal workflow model, transformation functions, and strategies for restoring consistency. It also presents a time-series based similarity measure and adaptation methods for knowledge transfer. The approach was prototypically implemented and evaluated, showing promising results that highlight the potential of AI-based support for flexible workflows in SMEs.
