Abstract

The article addresses the critical challenge of beaconing in asynchronous duty-cycled IoT networks, where nodes operate intermittently to conserve energy. Traditional centralized approaches have limitations, particularly in dynamic and multi-channel environments. The authors propose a novel distributed algorithm that enables nodes to compute collision-free beaconing schedules locally, minimizing latency and energy consumption. This algorithm is designed to work in time and considers the active time slots of each node, providing a theoretical bound on performance. Extensive simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in reducing beaconing latency and improving network efficiency compared to existing centralized algorithms. The article concludes with a discussion on future research directions, highlighting the need for further investigation into real-world wireless channel interferences and the development of more robust distributed algorithms.
