Abstract

The study investigates the distribution of Norway spruce undergrowth in primary middle taiga spruce forests, focusing on the impact of canopy projection zones and microsite conditions. It examines the density and occurrence of spruce undergrowth in different zones, such as intercrown, pericrown, and undercrown, and how these vary based on factors like microrelief and substrate. The research highlights the significant role of deadwood and its decay stages in promoting spruce regeneration, challenging the conventional focus on visible portions of woody detritus. The findings indicate that favorable conditions for spruce undergrowth are often associated with areas influenced by deadwood, both visible and hidden within the soil. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex interactions between forest structure, regeneration processes, and the role of deadwood in maintaining forest ecosystems.
