Abstract

The article delves into the critical issue of water pollution caused by heavy metal ions, with a particular focus on lead (Pb2+). It presents a novel adsorbent based on hyper-crosslinked PolyHIPE decorated with dithiocarbamate (DTC) groups, designed to efficiently remove Pb2+ from aqueous solutions. The synthesis process involves the preparation of PolyHIPE containing epoxy groups, followed by hyper-crosslinking to increase the specific surface area (SSA) and functionalization to introduce DTC chelating groups. The resulting adsorbent, HPoly-DTC, exhibits significantly enhanced adsorption capacity compared to its non-hyper-crosslinked counterpart. The study investigates the adsorption behavior, thermodynamic properties, and selectivity of HPoly-DTC, providing a detailed analysis of its adsorption mechanisms through XPS and FT-IR characterization. The results demonstrate the superior performance of HPoly-DTC in lead ion removal, highlighting its potential as a high-performance adsorbent for heavy metal ions in water treatment applications.
