Abstract

The chapter delves into the complex dynamics of aerosols above the Mediterranean Sea, driven by diverse sources like desert dust, anthropogenic pollutants, marine aerosols, and biomass burning. Using satellite data, particularly from MODIS, it reveals distinct seasonal patterns in aerosol optical depth (AOD), with higher values in summer and spring, and lower in autumn and winter. The study also examines the seasonal variability of PM concentrations and carbonaceous aerosols, showing higher levels in winter due to increased anthropogenic emissions and lower boundary layer heights. The chapter underscores the importance of these patterns in understanding regional air quality and climate, making it a valuable resource for environmental and atmospheric researchers.
