Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical issue of diabetic retinopathy (DR), a major cause of blindness that progresses through several stages, from mild non-proliferative to proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The text explores the use of deep learning (DL) techniques for early detection and severity assessment of DR from retinal fundus images, offering a promising solution for screening large populations efficiently. It compares the performance of various pre-trained DL models, including ResNet50, MobileNet-V2, GoogLeNet, and VGG16, in classifying different stages of DR. The study highlights the superior performance of ResNet50 and GoogLeNet, achieving high accuracy and F1 scores. Additionally, the chapter discusses the impact of different hyper-parameters and optimizers on model performance, emphasizing the importance of early detection and the potential of computer-aided diagnosis tools in managing DR effectively. The findings underscore the need for further research and analysis to improve the generalizability and robustness of these models in real-world clinical settings.
