Abstract

This study delves into the effectiveness of trip length models in capturing the trade-off between speed and cost for daily commuters, with a specific focus on Guwahati, India. The research explores the evolution of trip length models, from early linear models to more sophisticated utility-based approaches, and examines their accuracy in predicting commuter behavior. Key topics include the impact of speed and cost on travel decisions, the role of real-time data in improving model accuracy, and the influence of socio-demographic factors on mode choice. The study also highlights the limitations of traditional models and the advancements in dynamic models that adapt to changing travel conditions. Through a detailed survey of 420 commuters, the research identifies significant factors such as income, vehicle ownership, and travel distance that influence mode selection. The findings suggest that while trip length models have advanced, further improvements in data collection and model adaptation are necessary to fully understand commuter decisions regarding speed and cost. This study provides valuable insights for transportation planners and policymakers aiming to optimize urban transit systems and enhance the quality of life for daily commuters.
