Abstract

The article investigates the effectiveness of the circular economy in mitigating environmental emissions within the European Union. It discusses the EU's transition towards a circular economy framework since 2014 and its impact on reducing carbon footprints associated with production and consumption. The study analyzes the trends of greenhouse gas emissions, including CO2, CH4, and N2O, and highlights the role of circular economy practices in lowering these emissions. The article also explores the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis and its relevance to the circular economy, providing empirical evidence and policy implications for enhancing environmental sustainability in the EU.

As proven by Pesaran et al. (1999) and Ali et al. (2017), the ARDL model is free from residual correlation, thus eliminating endogeneity problems and avoiding inconclusive inference due to appropriate lag selection. Additionally, this study conducted a robustness check using Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS), where the main advantage of the DOLS estimation is that it addresses potential endogeneity and small sample bias (Ali et al., 2017).
