Abstract

This chapter examines the strategic use of historical narratives by the Kremlin to justify aggression against Ukraine, focusing on the securitisation of historical memory. It explores how history is instrumentalised to shape national identity and foreign policy, with a particular emphasis on the role of the 'Great Patriotic War' narrative. The chapter also delves into the ideological framing of Russian aggression and the construction of historical and commemorative factors as instruments of foreign policy. Additionally, it analyzes the impact of historical politics on domestic and foreign policy, and the use of historical narratives to legitimise military actions and occupation. The conclusion highlights the transformative role of history in the Russo-Ukrainian war, serving as both an ideological justification and a direct mechanism for undermining Ukrainian statehood and identity.
