Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of trustworthy AI (TAI) in motivating the use of generative AI (GenAI) applications, addressing key concerns such as reliability, data privacy, and bias. It explores how specific TAI factors, like technical robustness and privacy governance, influence user motivations compared to traditional motivators from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). The study highlights that while TAI principles are generally supported, factors like effort expectancy and performance expectancy are more compelling motivators for GenAI usage. It also examines how different types of GenAI usage—such as generating ideas, getting answers, solving problems, and writing assistance—correlate with specific TAI and UTAUT factors. Conducted in Singapore, a notable AI hub, the research provides valuable insights into user-centric perspectives on GenAI and TAI, offering tailored recommendations for AI governance policies, system design, and marketing strategies. The findings underscore the importance of addressing user concerns about GenAI trustworthiness to promote more ethical and effective use of these technologies.
