11. Domestic Energy Consumption Pattern in Maharashtra with Special Reference to Thane District

Energy is considered as a key factor in achieving sustainable development, decision regarding energy use has complex linkages with policies related to poverty, health and education and employment opportunities. This chapter aims to explore main factors influencing energy consumption for cooking, heating and lighting purposes in Thane district. It addresses whether affordable access to modern fuel is available for cooking, heating and food processing needs and to reduce reliance on fuel, wood and traditional uses of biomass materials. This chapter also analyses the extent to which increased use of renewable energy can provide reliable and affordable energy services and assist developing counties in expediting their economic development and overcome poverty. The information regarding the energy-use pattern was collected through survey by using questionnaire, and then analysed. The objective of the study is to measure and estimate the daily per capita fuel expenditure by using traditional and modern methods for cooking, water heating and lighting and to determine the fuel consumption pattern in rural and urban households or areas. This chapter also suggests encouraging increased use of renewable energy among the people in both urban and rural areas.
