Abstract

Domesticating the Horrors of Modern War: Civil Defense and the Wartime British Murder Mystery delves into the fascinating intersection of civil defense preparations and popular fiction in interwar Britain. The chapter examines how the British government's efforts to prepare civilians for chemical warfare were reflected and normalized in literature, particularly in the genre of murder mysteries. It explores how these stories helped domesticate the terrifying prospect of gas warfare, making it a part of everyday life and reducing public anxiety. The text also highlights the shift from sensational depictions of chemical warfare in science fiction to its more contained and manageable portrayal in detective fiction. By analyzing key literary works and cultural responses, the chapter offers a compelling narrative of how British society grappled with the impending horrors of war through the lens of popular fiction.
