Renault and Heudiasyc have opened a new laboratory, which mainly deals with data collection for autonomous driving. The Renault-Nissan Alliance and Transdev are also jointly working on a public transport concept.

Renault is promoting the development of autonomous driving: together with its French collaboration partner Heudiasyc, the company has opened the new research centre SivaLab to the north of Paris. The laboratory is to carry out fundamental research on autonomous driving. The collaboration will focus on collecting data efficiently for autonomous driving, explains Renault. The collaboration partner Heudiasyc is a joint research unit of UTC (Université de Technologie de Compiègne) and the national research institute CNRS.

The autonomous test vehicle is based on the Renault Zoe. In order for the self-driving vehicle to drive reliably and safely through the traffic, the vehicle needs exact data on its location. That is where the collaboration with SivaLab’s scientists comes in. Matching multiple data sources for their research activities, maps, information from other traffic users, and infrastructural data such as traffic lights and intelligent road surfaces are included into the calculation. The partnership is planned initially for a period of four years.

Public transport system based on a Zoe fleet

The Renault Zoe will also be used in another research project on autonomous driving: The Renault-Nissan Alliance and Transdev are testing an innovative, on-demand public mobility service in a joint venture. Transdev is an international provider of public transport. The aim of the joint venture is to integrate driverless vehicles into the public transport system. The field tests with the Renault Zoe and the routing software from Transdev will take place in Paris-Saclay.

Renault-Nissan is also working with software house Microsoft on autonomous cars.
