Commercial vehicle manufacturer Scania is showcasing a Euro-6-compliant gas engine at the Ecomondo 2017 trade fair in Italy. The OC13 will be used for long-distance transport, as well as on construction sites.

"Until now, most gas engines have either been too weak or had an insufficient range to be really useful for heavy, long-distance transports", says Johan Mühlbach, Product Manager Gas, Scania Trucks. This should change with the new gas engine based on Scania’s 13-litre engine.

With 302 kW of power at 1,100 to 1,400 rpm, and a torque of 2,000 newton metres, the gas engine should provide similar values to a diesel engine of the same size, while reducing CO2 emissions by 15 to 90 percent. With liquid natural gas (LNG), a semi-trailer truck of up to 40 tonnes can drive 1,100 kilometres without refuelling. With twin LNG tanks, the range should increase to 1,600 kilometres. According to Scania, European customers are very interested in gas-powered vehicles for long-distance transport of heavy goods.
