Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical issues of droughts and salinization in the Yellow River basin, focusing on their profound impact on agriculture. It begins by introducing various drought indexes, such as the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI), the Palmer Drought Index (PDSI), and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), each with its own advantages and limitations. The text then explores the spatial and temporal variations of droughts in the basin, highlighting the significant impact on the environment and agriculture, particularly in the Loess Plateau. Strategies and methods for drought mitigation are discussed, including the expansion of check-dam land and terrace land, the cultivation of drought-resistant crops, and the improvement of irrigation efficiency. The chapter also addresses the interconnected issue of salinization, caused by both natural and anthropogenic factors, and its adverse impacts on crop yield and plant growth. Various mitigation strategies, such as drainage engineering measures, planting salt-tolerant crops, and chemical measures, are explored to promote agricultural sustainability.
