Abstract

Current drug delivery methods lack precise control over drug release and targeted delivery, resulting in suboptimal treatment outcomes and potential side effects. Therefore, there is a critical need to investigate and develop novel drug delivery systems that offer controlled and targeted release of therapeutic agents, improving the efficacy and safety of medical treatments. Polyurethane and montmorillonite clay systems were synthesized and evaluated as support materials for atenolol drug delivery. The MMT/polyurethane-drug delivery systems were prepared by condensation of toluene-2,4-diisocyanate with polyethylene glycol, 2,2-dihydoxymethyl-propionic acid contained atenolol drug, and various ratios of modified MMT clay. The resulting nanocomposite structure was evaluated with different analytical methods. The atenolol release rates from synthesized polyurethane and intercalated polyurethane containing atenolol drugs were studied in human intestinal-like fluids under many factors. The release data show that a number of important parameters, including pH values, co-monomer types, polymer structures, organoclay ratios, and loaded drug levels, significantly impact drug release.
