Abstract

The contamination of soils by heavy metals poses a severe ecological and health risk. This chapter investigates the use of dry olive residue (DOR) biotransformed by saprobic fungi as an organic amendment for soil remediation. DOR, a by-product of olive oil extraction, is rich in organic matter but requires pretreatment due to its antimicrobial and phytotoxic properties. Mycoremediated DOR (MDOR) produced by fungi like Bjerkandera adusta, Coprinellus radians, Coloriolopsis rigida, and Penicillium chrysogenum, can degrade toxic substances and reduce metal bioavailability. The study compares the effects of various MDOR amendments on heavy metal-contaminated soil, using wheat plants as a model. Results indicate that MDOR significantly enhances soil biological activity and reduces metal concentrations in plants, offering a promising solution for soil remediation.
