Abstract

The chapter delves into the development of a dual motor power management strategy for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to address the challenges of long-distance travel and high capital costs associated with fully battery-operated vehicles. It introduces a powertrain configuration comprising dual motors, an engine, a generator, and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) system. The goal is to achieve optimal drivability and extended driving range. The chapter reviews various types of electric traction motors, emphasizing the preference for permanent magnet synchronous motors due to their high power density and performance. It discusses the different modes of operation, including start/stop, acceleration, cruising, de-acceleration, and idle, and how the fuzzy controller decides the operating mode based on the state of charge (SoC) and traveling distance. The chapter also presents simulation results showcasing the dynamic response of the vehicle under various load conditions, highlighting significant reductions in battery losses compared to conventional vehicles. The conclusion emphasizes the effectiveness of the dual motor powertrain in achieving better dynamic control and supporting maximum electric mode operation, ultimately satisfying the main objectives of extended driving range and improved drivability.
