Abstract

The article introduces a groundbreaking dual-sparse parallel nested array (DS-PNA) designed for high-precision two-dimensional direction of arrival (DOA) estimation. Unlike existing arrays, the DS-PNA enhances array aperture and reduces mutual coupling by enlarging inter-antenna spacings. The systematic procedure for determining antenna positions maximizes the degrees of freedom in the difference coarray domain, resulting in robust and unique DOA estimates. The novel design offers superior performance in both pitch and azimuth angle estimation, as demonstrated through extensive simulations. The DS-PNA's ability to provide stable and accurate estimates even in the presence of mutual coupling makes it a standout solution in the field of DOA estimation.
