Historical research covering the past 220 years has identified 1,245 dyke breaches in Hungary, including 556 cases where the length of the breach was known. During the past 50 years (1954-2004), the dominant type of failure has shifted from overtopping to hydraulic subsoil failure, due to the continuous heightening of the dykes.
