Abstract

This chapter delves into the dynamic analysis of tall buildings, focusing on the impact of varying plan aspect ratios on wind and earthquake responses. Key topics include the influence of aspect ratios on dynamic wind forces, the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for wind analysis, and the comparison of results with traditional wind tunnel testing. The study examines buildings with aspect ratios ranging from 1:4 to 1:8, analyzing parameters such as velocity profiles, pressure coefficients, eddy viscosity, and turbulence kinetic energy. The findings reveal that as the aspect ratio increases, the dynamic wind response in the along-wind direction increases while decreasing in the across-wind direction. Additionally, the study highlights the generation of horseshoe vortices and the formation of negative pressure zones at the base of the buildings. The chapter concludes with a comprehensive discussion on the implications of these findings for the design and safety of tall buildings, emphasizing the importance of adopting analytical approaches like CFD for wind analysis.
