Abstract

The article investigates the dynamic characteristics of single- and two-phase flows through multistage orifices, with a particular focus on the use of drag-reducing polymers (DRPs) to minimize pressure drop. The study begins by discussing the importance of orifice meters in nuclear engineering applications and the need for multistage orifices to achieve higher pressure drops. It then delves into the existing research on drag reduction in turbulent flows using high molecular weight polymers. The experimental setup involves a flow loop designed for two-phase flows, with detailed descriptions of the test section and the use of PIV techniques for flow visualization. The results highlight the significant drag reduction achieved using DRPs, particularly at lower Reynolds numbers, and the impact of DRPs on flow patterns and velocity profiles. The study also includes a brief discussion on the potential applications of DRPs in nuclear reactor cooling systems. Overall, the article provides valuable insights into the use of DRPs to enhance flow efficiency in complex orifice systems.
