Abstract

The article presents a groundbreaking approach to creating recyclable high-performance materials by utilizing dynamic ester bond cross-linking networks based on isomannitol. Traditional thermosetting materials, while possessing superior mechanical properties, are not recyclable due to their irreversible cross-linking. Vitrimers, a new category of polymers, offer a solution by allowing materials to be reprocessed and reshaped while maintaining their full chemical structure. The study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of isomannitol-based vitrimers, highlighting their exceptional mechanical properties, thermal stability, and self-healing capabilities. The novel bio-based polyurethane thermoset developed in this study demonstrates excellent performance, including high tensile strength, thermal stability, and the ability to undergo multiple processing cycles with retained strength. These findings open new avenues for sustainable and eco-friendly material development, reducing dependence on fossil resources and expanding the application of plant-based materials.
